ACADEMIC BACKGROUND
Dr. Arcilla received his Bachelor of Science degree in Geology from the University of the Philippines in 1981. He earned his Master’s degree in Geology and Doctorate degree in Geotechnical Engineering and Geosciences from the University of Illinois in 1991 and 1998, respectively.

BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND/ EXPERIENCE
Dr. Arcilla previously served as the director of both the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) and the University of the Philippines National Institute of Geological Sciences (UP NIGS), where he led groundbreaking projects in nuclear medicine, mining, and environmental applications. Currently, Dr. Arcilla is back at UP NIGS, where he imparts his expertise to students in the field of Geology.

Dr. Arcilla has been a key figure in national disaster mitigation programs like Project NOAH and the development of innovative solutions, such as the first garbage-fueled electric power plant. He also led significant DOST-funded projects like PROMT and REVIVE PH, focusing on sustainable technologies for mine tailings management and mining site rehabilitation.

Recognized among the top 100 scientists in Asia, Dr. Arcilla’s influence is reflected in the success of his students, many of whom have graduated from prestigious universities and ventured into industries like drilling, gemstones, and chemical analyses. Additionally, he has been a strong advocate for the peaceful use of atomic energy in the Philippines, playing a crucial role in the passage of the PhilATOM Law and its Implementing Rules and Regulations.
