Mr. Pangilinan graduated cum laude from the Ateneo de ManilaUniversity with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics. He received hisMaster of Business Administration degree from Wharton School of theUniversity of Pennsylvania in 1968.
BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND/ EXPERIENCE
Mr. Pangilinan founded First Pacific Company Limited ("First Pacific"), acorporation listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, in May 1981. Heserved as Managing Director of First Pacific since its founding in 1981until 1999. He was appointed Executive Chairman until June 2003, afterwhich he was named Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer.Mr. Pangilinan is the President and CEO of PLDT Incorporated, thecountry's dominant telecom company and Smart CommunicationsIncorporated - the largest mobile phone operator in the Philippines,and continues to serve as their Chairman concurrently.
In May 2006, the Office of the President of the Philippines awarded Mr.Pangilinan the Order of Lakandula, rank of Komandante, in recognitionof his contributions to the country. He was named Management Man ofthe Year 2005 by the Management Association of the Philippines. Mr.Pangilinan was awarded Honorary Doctorates in Science by Far EasternUniversity in 2010; in Humanities by Holy Angel University in 2008; byXavier University in 2007; and by San Beda College. He was formerlyChairman of the Board of Trustees of the Ateneo de Manila Universityand was a member of the Board of Overseers of the Wharton School.He is a member of the ASEAN Business Advisory Council.
Mr. Pangilinan has been a Director of Philex Mining Corporation andPhilex Gold Philippines, Inc. since November 2008. He also serves asChairman of Manila Electric Company (MERALCO), Metro PacificInvestments Corporation, Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation, and ofnon-listed companies including Beacon Electric Asset Holdings Inc.,PLDT Communications and Energy Ventures Inc. (formerly Piltel),Maynilad Water Services Corporation ("Maynilad"), MediaquestIncorporated, Associated Broadcasting Corporation (TV5), LandcoPacific Corporation, Makati Medical Center, Cardinal Santos MedicalCenter, Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Asian Hospital Incorporated,Central Luzon Doctor's Hospital, De Los Santos Medical Center, ManilaDoctors Hospital, Jesus Delgado Memorial Hospital, Marikina ValleyMedical Center, Sacred Heart of Malolos (Bulacan), Davao DoctorsIncorporated, Riverside Medical Center Incorporated (Bacolod), WestMetro Medical Center Hospital (Zamboanga), and Megaclinic. In 2012,he was appointed as Vice Chairman of Roxas Holdings, Incorporatedwhich owns and operates the largest sugar milling operations in thePhilippines.
